Unhappy Gauges sweep on startup..

I have a 2002 F150.. Upon startup on some occasions, the gauges sweep all the way over and then go to normal position. Anyone know what this means??

I have driven some gm trucks with gauges that would run a self test on start up.
they would sweep to max and fall when the switch was in the run position before
starting the engine. If you hit the starter fast it would skip it. Might check the
owners manual, if you have one and see if yours has this feature.

Checked it out yesterday, the battery was on its last leg. Replaced with an OPtima Red top and back on the road.

sweet deal. The gauge sweep is typical of a failing battery in the newer trucks

Well, I had the same problem.

Since my battery was the original, which will soon be 5 years old, I bought a new one. However, I was surprised to find quite a bit of corrosion on the negative post. My guess is that I would have been fine just cleaning that up, topping the cells with distilled water, and re-connecting.

But as I said, it's 5 years old. Don't want to find out my guess is wrong in January!

Yea, we don't have the frigid cold down here, but the blasting heat is not kind to batteries either......

The optimum temperature for lead-acid batteries is supposed to be around 77 degrees.
