Do the 4 and 550's use a different strategy as far as emission's programming compared to the 2 and 350's? I did head studs and an EGR delete on an 07 550 last Saturday with no tuning and am still waiting on the P0401 to throw a CEL. I know on all the 05 and up trucks I have done head studs and EGR delete kits on, it will eventually throw the light unless you tune it. It has been driven over 500 miles since Sat with numerous key on cycles and still has not thrown a light. So do the 4 and 550's not throw this code because they conform to lighter emissions regulations?
I believe the only trucks that get the CEL after EGR delete are the CA trucks. Mine is a CA X. When I had the EGR unplugged, I had a constant CEL. When I cleared the EGR codes the light went out until the next time I drove it. Got the X3 with custom tunes and that cleared it for good.
Now the CEL comes on if I punch it going up long highway hills.
The scantool at Autozone always reads P0401, and once its cleared it stays away until the next hill.
I can't afford any custom tunes right now so till then I keep stopping at my local Autozone ... & buying a new small item so I don't feel so guilty getting all those free scans
