I have a 2006 6.0PS. I bought it used with a warranty and the warranty is almost expired. I bought autometer gauges and my plans are a 4" exhaust, EGR delete and oil cooler. I am going to be purchasing an SCT3 tuner with custom tunes. They asked if I had upgraded the head studs and if not they can keep the pressure down. My question is do I NEED to install head studs? It is quite expensive for someone to lift the cab and do the install. I am going to attempt the EGR delete and oil cooler myself. Without doing the head studs will I still see a power increase with the tuner, exhaust etc...? Also what risks will I be taking withoutthe head studs even though the SCT will have a tune to eliminate much of the concern? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
I have never heard of a tune that will not blow your head gaskets....
I would do studs before I tuned mine...
My feelings exactly. The stock "tune" will blow head gaskets just like the stock bolts will (sometimes) handle some custom tunes (not often!!!!). That's strictly a gamble. Do gauges, exhaust, coolant filter, etc and let your motor live a long and prosperous life.
I installed an EGR delete, 4" turbo back exhaust and bought the SCT w/ custom tunes for a non-studded motor....1 year later (last week) I had blown head gaskets.
I just installed SCT tunes, for similar reasons as OP. I really, really didn't need to read this thread this morning... Or I suppose I did really need to read it, but hate the concept that I need to do ARPs now. I trusted what I had heard and read before, when was told that the SCT tunes were safe for non-studded trucks.
I guess I'd better start saving pennys in my piggy bank for my new deposit into the money pit. Geeze, does it ever end? I haven't even afforded gauges yet.
I feel your pain. I paid $25000 for the truck, $2800 for repairs that the warranty didn't cover, $3000 for wheels/tires, a leveling kit & shocks, $450 for gauges and now I need to drop $6000 for studs, EGR delete, oil cooler & coolant filter system. That brings me to grand total of $39,500! Needless to say my wife is not happy but I'm sure all of this will make it worth it. I plan on keeping this truck for at least another decade. I just need to find some more $$ somewhere..... By the way anyone need a stock set of 18" wheels with tires, center caps and lug nuts??!!??
I don't where you pulled those number from but $6000 is way high for that work. I do head jobs for $1000 in labor. Plus parts. You can do the head studs egr delete oil cooler and coolant filter for like $3000-$3500 for parts and labor.
