Hello Everyone,
My 97 F-250HD, 460hp engine seems to race and sounds like the idle is fast. When I take my foot off of the brake, my truck will go 10 MPH on it's own when weighted down, a little bit faster with no load in bed. The service station replaced the Idle control motor, but did not help. Another mechanic said to see if it races with the A/C compressor on. If it does there is a problem with the wiring harness from A/C compressor to the idle motor control. i was told to check again with everything off on a warm day to see if the problem is still there, and if so the wiring harness for the termostat fan clutch, A/C compressor, then to the idle motor has a problem in it. Has anyone had a problem like this? If not any ideas on what to do? I was told the computer is OK.
I have a 97 f-250 with a 460 and I had the same problem the other day. I removed the IAC (idle air control I think) on the front of the throttle body (a silver canister looking thing with 2 bolts) cleaned it out with carb cleaner, and my idle is perfect again thanks to the other posts on here!!!
Replacing IAC motor would have been my first guess as well. I don't have any suggestions but I'd like to see what kind of tips this thread generates.
This is kind of apples and oranges but many Cobras have the same kind of problem you have (including mine) and 9 times out of 10 it's NOT the IAC motor. Any good troubleshooting tips should apply to either vehicle. No one seems to be able to figure it out.
