A set of feeler gauges is good but a dwell meter is a bit more accurate IF the engine will turn over...( to be exact/ pinpoint/dead-on)

MIKE 0o0o0o - I'm retired { like retread = tired twice]].

Hey, at least with the cheby's one could use an allen wrench to adjust the dwell.. I have a question for you old pro's...Do you remember how to adjust a dual point dizzy? I had a trick for point gap adjustment before checking total dwell. It could mean a lot at the track.

Sorry for the Hijack of the thread, but this thread was way too cool to pass up.
I have at least 2 dwell meters and as many timing lights. When I ran dual point dist., I used them to cheat. I wired in a switch between the point sets so I could shut off one set. Then set the first set for the .017 gap then set total advance to 44°. Then I threw the switch and adjusted the second set of points so that max timing backed off to 38°. Ran 44° advance in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears and flipped the switch to run 38° in high gear. Dropped 1/2 a tenth off my ET doing this. Thinking about it I still have a dual point dist. plate hanging on a hook over my work bench.

Justinyaa420 Glad to hear you got it running, glad to help.
If I remember right (That's not a sure thing anymore), on dual points you set the dwell angle idividually. Set the point gaps with a feeler gauge, then place a piece of paper, thin card or something between one of the set of points, hook up your dwell meter, crank the engine over (coil wire disconected, of course) and adjust the opposite set of points to get the proper dwell angle. Repeat for the other set of points. Then with the engine running check the total dwell.
Hmmm, I just sneezed and cobwebs came out

You remember and you are correct. You could leave the paper between one set of points, if I remember, while the engine is running to set the dwell and repeat for the other set before checking total, Wow, this was a long time ago. lol I will admit this, I never tried what Bear described, I wasnt smart enough then or now. Wow

Sorry for the Hijack justinyaa420, was a good thread for trouble shooting point type systems.
