Torque Convertor Shot??

2006 Expi with 73000 miles. Just started hearing a whistle-type sound from the tranny area when the truck is in gear, forward or reverse. Seems to tune itself with engine RPMs versus highway speed. Can't hear the noise in park or neutral. Tranny shifts fine, no jerking, no slipping, nothing besides the "noise". If not for the noise, I wouldn't even think anything is wrong. Been doing it for about a week.

Any ideas? Other info I've read on-line seems to suggest torque converter. I was planning on getting rid of it soon anyway (nickle-dime stuff is killing me!), so I may just turn on the air and turn the radio on low when I trade it in. If you didn't know any better, someone might actually think it's normal.

If I were to fix it (assuming it is torque converter), any idea what it costs to replace at a shop? I believe tranny has to be R and R'd to complete job. Would this be a good time to replace a flywheel as well? I get the dreaded starter grind every now and then that a new starter didn't fix (though it did make the problem a lot less frequent). I figure if the flywheel is dinged, might as well do that at the same time.

I did have the fluid flushed about 3 months ago.

Thanks!

Many times the whine heard from Ford transmissions is the front pump and in many cases it can get quite loud. I have heard it in many fleet vehicles. They will often go 50,000 or more miles with out a problem. But then again?

I'll give a link to the thread I created on this issue on the forums here, I didn't get any responses from the Expy group, but I did find a couple of posts on the F150 group relating to this issue.

https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...ne-solved.html

I'll pass on a couple things I did (and learned) on the swap. I didn't have to touch the exhaust system, I made a cradle out of 2x4's and 3/4 ply that fit the tranny pan so I could use my floor jack as a poor mans tranny jack (also used a ratchet strap to hold the tranny), split the transfer case off before removing the tranny, watch the wiring at the bell housing area on reinstallation

It was actually fairly easy project, and I did notice a difference in the take off from a stoplight performance being better along with the noise being gone.
