I want to change the 4 speed out of my '83 F-350 2 wheel 6.9 with the 5 speed out of the '93 -7.3 parts truck. Anyone see a problem with this. Any suggestions?
You will have to change out the clutch and pressure plate as they are different. Either use the duel mass from the 7.3 or do as I did and get a single mass conversion for the 7.3 and put it on the 6.9. You could use the origanal flywheel for the 6.9, if you can find the clutch plate that has the correct hub to fit the input shaft on the ZF5. Cheaperjeeper posted the part nos. for the clutch plate that he used when he did this conversion 2 -3 years ago, but I couldn't get them to cross over to NAPA nos. so I just went with the 7.3 single mass conversion.
Thanks for the info "farmert". I have a dual mass and used clutch, but had an new in the box clutch/p plate for a 6.9. Hoped to use existing parts. I can by new clutch. Thanks again, now I will be looking for a cheap turbo set up.
Two things I don't see mentioned, they need to be the same wheel base (else drive line issues), they both need to be the same wheel drive. (2wd or 4wd)
I did mention 2 wheel on the '83 but not on the '93. They are both 2 wheel. I really don't think much on some issues like drive line since I make drive shafts as needed anyway. I'm a retired machinist ( except on my repairs which seem to be numerous) and custom made the current one on the '83.
I appreciate your concern, but at first I was a bit flustered. Been there done all that. I reminded myself that there are those that say they are something and are not. I have found that if shafts are turned true and welded properly, they will have no vibration in trucks running 85 mph. (I'm not sure that I will run the 'ole 6.9 faster than that.) There is always the first time and it can be balanced locally. Again, thanks for the word of caution.
i did it, i had to. we were in mich. camping with some friends and i twisted my drive shaft like a pretzel and ripped it in half. had to make a new one to get home. took a longer one and cut it down, made a jig, used a sharpie to indicate it, and welded it up. it's still in my truck today . by the way, my camper is a 35 foot, 11,000 lb fifth wheel.
