engine numbers

stamped on my 302 block deck just below the distributor is the engine assembly code.
My block reads 7H31R
Any body know how to read this?
I'm pretty sure the casting number above the starter (haven't taken it off yet to read it) is a EO something if I remember. I thought it was a 1980 something block.
Any help

Thanks
Dennis

Date codes

This is from the FAQs post at the top of the forum:

Decoding Dates

Date codes are sometimes included on parts. The first digit is the year. To determine the decade, refer to the part number's prefix. The second digit is the month. Note that the character "I" is not used. Refer to the chart below. The third digit is the day of the month.
Second Digit Month
A January
B February
C March
D April
E May
F June
G July
H August
I Not Used
J September
K October
L November
M December

Last revised: July 98

So your date code would indicate 1987, August 31st.
