A.I.R ??????

Was looking at my air pump today. 94 E150 5.8, Doesn't make sense. The suction hose and the discharge hose both go to the airbox. How does the air pressure get into the exhaust that way?

P.S. WTF is that football looking thing in my airbox snorkle and what is it's purpose?

Pictures... need pics to understand what you're looking at.. because the air pump definitely does not connect to the engine air intake box.

The football shaped thing on the air box is a muffler for the intake. It's supposed to supress certain types of intake noise.

It's been a while since I looked at an AIR system routing, but it could be a dump that goes back into the air box, though I don't understand why.

On my 89 E-150, there is an intake AND a discharge that went to the factory air filter box from the AIR pump (I swapped to MAF so I will have to run two dinky "Specter" brand conical air filters instead since the factory flat air filter box is no longer present).

However, there should be a long rubber or metal tube that runs along the passenger side of the engine near the exhaust manifold that carries air from the AIR pump to the crossover pipe between the heads on the back of the engine.
