I never said my starter was eatting ring gears. That was said by the OP. My ring gear just came off or had been off when I bought the truck. My ring gear is in good shape other than falling off the flywheel

That's because the 153T ring gear and flywheel are designed for the starter to PULL the gear BACK, the Late style PUSHES the gear OUT.
What is happeneing is the starter is KICKING the gear off the flywheel.
Again, like for like, you cannot mix and match the parts. Either buy a 184 flywheel and be done with it, or buy an early style starter if your bellhousing can accomodate it.
Not really sure where any confusion can arise from this information.
Ring gears are sweated onto flywheels (like many front sights on pistols/rifles).
How the ring gear could just fall off, is beyond me...unless a PO used the torch method.
Some people, instead of having a machine shop R&R the ring gear, use a torch to heat the old one, then it falls off, then heat the replacement, then install it.
This method works in some cases, biut in others may not...as it all depends on the skill of the installer.
