Recently picked up a 92 F150, 5.8L. Had a small squeak in the motor and thought it was one of the pulleys and some were loose so I tightened everything down and oiled everything up and the sound continued. Thought it might be the the fan belt so changed it and sound went away for about 10 minutes now with new belt sound is worse than before so went back to old belt and now I'm stuck. Sound gets louder as I turn the steering wheel, could it be a bad power sterring pulley? Any suggestions?
Lift the belt off and spin every pulley by hand, listen and feel for any roughness. Pay particular to attention the the tensioner pulley and waterpump. Check for excessive fore and aft play in the waterpump.
As ArdW says check the PS pump.

Reason: typo
Woo hoo, no more whining sound but... When I put the truck in reverse it stalls out (turns right back on) and while idling the engine shakes a little bit. Could this be the air flow sensor? thanks,
