I noticed that I have 3 exhaust manifold bolts that are broke off on the passenger side of motor. The exhaust manifold started leaking about 3 days ago. I called some mechanics today and most of them did not want to attempt this job. I cannot believe these bolts broke, the truck only has 89,000 miles on it. Any ideas or suggestions would greatly be appreciated.
I am wondering if i should spend the money to fix this problem or trade it off on a new truck. This truck is paid off, hate to trade it in, Not a easy decision to make.
If you pay me $5000 I'll take it off your hands, manifold bolt problems and all. I'm only kidding of course. There is a V10 specific forum here you might try.
You don't need to spend big money or trade it in. Broken manifold bolts are common on the 5.4 and v10.
I still need to fix mine, but have been told its not too bad.
I've been quoted $300 for fix my broken studs. Most dealers will charge $1000 or less. There are aftermarket manifolds available now if yours break when removed.
I have done them on a '99 Superduty with the V10 and also a '99 F150 with the 5.4 engine and it was by far easier on the V10. It is not a terrible job to do yourself or pay to have it done and keep the truck. You know what you have and its paid for.
Just talked to a mechanic this morning, he said they have replaced many of them on the v10 and 5.4 v8. He said he would charge 200 to 400 to do the job. I didn't think that was a bad price. He said they usually weld a nut on the stud and remove it if it is not broke off flush with the head or they use a stud extractor. As long as they don't have to pull the head, I will be happy. Thanks everybody for the info and help, this is a excellent website. Thank you from northern Minnesota.
I have owned fords my whole life and proud to be a ford fan, but this time ford should admit they have a real problem with these studs breaking off and have them recalled or have a update. It is sad that you spend 35 to 40,000 for a truck and you have these issues under 100,000 miles, ford should pay to fix this problem. Just my 2cents worth.
