well as most of you know im out here in laramie for school. and i think my glow plugs are going bad and i want to replace them and make sure that the old girl will start this winter since it gets pretty cold out here. what tools will i need to replace the glow plugs? im going to try to see if maybe i can do it at school but idk if i will be able too.
Lots of 3/8" drive socket extensions and u-joints to get to all the bolts for the valve covers. Plus a torque wrench to re-torque the injectors and rocker arms.
its been in the 50s abd 60s at night here. and when i go out to start my truck i have to cycle the glow plugs twice and she fires right up it doesent really white smoke. just a puff of black. would my gp relay cause this or do i need new glow plugs i need to put new glow plugs and relay on im going to throw a relay on it simply because its easy and it might fix my prob im goin to try to wait on doing gps till i go home so i can do it in the shop and have al the tools
Try plugging the block heater in over night. This may work to help you out until you can change the plugs.
It makes a world of difference for me during the cooler months, even in TN.
the glow plug relay is the relay closest to the firewall right? well i got to looking and that relay looks like its been hot what is wrong if the relay is getting hot
ok since the gp tested good im going to try and replace the relay and see what that does. idk if altitude would effect starting or not it normally started just fine in missouri down to between 0 and 30 and im running 15w-40 rotella. and it gets down to between 50-70 at night and if i do not cycle the gp twice it will just crank but if i cycle them twice it fires right up.
well i went out this morning to start my truck and it wouldnt start just cranked and white smoked out neighbor hood. so i jumped the glow plug relay with a pair of pliers and finally got it started went to oriellys and got the gpr-109 and figured i would replace it since it looked like it had been hot and was the cheapest to try first so i started to take the old one off and all the terminals broke out of the old relay and the relay split in half so im guessing it was bad. im hoping it fixed it and i do not have any problems in the morning i would hate to be late the first day of school lol.
