hey guys thanks for the help on my last thread!! Ive got a silly question, ive been looking at edelbrock carbs for my offy dp and as for the secondarys on the 1403 500 edelbrock it says they are air valve? does that mean vaccum secondarys? can i make it work? sorry about the silly questions up till now all of my trucks have been efi thanks jon
The edelbrock carb has mechanical secondary throttle plates, but they use an internal weighted butterfly assembly to control how much air/fuel flows thru the venturis. In that manner, the secondaries only flow what the engine can *actually* pull, at any given RPM. Kinda like the old q-jet from rochester, and exactly like the old carter AFB (which is what the edelbrock carb is).
I am using the 1403. I have had it for almost a year, and it works well. However, I do have over-size valves. I also bought the jet kit for the carb, about $50, that allows you to adjust the WOT mix, change the jets, and the springs on the secondaries, so they open sooner or later.
The only prob I had was when I was adjusting the idle mix, the spring popped out, taking the threads with it. But Edelbrock swapped out the carb body and rebuilt it gratis. Edelbrock put out many how-to vids on youtube to help customers work on their carb. It is very simple.
You will most likely need the Lokar or Septre bracket for the throttle cable and return springs, or make one yourself. You also need to plumb the underside of your Offy.
thanks for the help guys! i bought a water heated spacer off ebay to take care of that issue, do you think that the 1403 is too much for what iam tring to acheave? I pull a 3500lbs tractor around alot and am looking to get more power if ya know what i mean ive done a few mods already and can tell a big difference i kinda want to stay away from the holley 390 just because of what some people on here have said once again thanks for the help!!!!! (thats me by the way)
My experience with the Edelbrock is limited, so I don't want to mislead you. It ran well on my engine from the start. I don't know how built you are. I would guess that if your head is not ported, it may be a bit much. But that is why I recommended getting the jet kit with the carb. You can change the jets very easily with the carb installed, the metering rods too. The carb also comes with a booklet that has a chart showing which rods, jets to use to make what changes. If the carb is too much, you can cut down on its flow by making simple changes.
I have changed the metering rods on mine, and it was too easy.
