Howdy. This is probably a silly question, but, I just bought a 1975 Highboy w/360, C6, NP203. Needs a bed and some work, but I've got time. What is the wire connector next to the speedometer cable? It was off and dangling when I bought it. Also, I've been researching here on the forums, but haven't found it yet, but, can I just swap out the 203 for a 205? I know this sounds corny, but, I just happen to have one laying around, with the C6 it came with. Thanks.!
Welcome to the site.
This is a great place for all ford info.
There isn't suposed to be a wire that goes into the 203. I have a 203 and a 205, and neither one has a wire, just the speed o cable.
I'm trying to swap my 203 to a 205 right now, and it's not a bolt on swap, but things you'd need:
proper length adapter between the tranny and t case, shift linkage, driveshafts, front hubs if it doesn't have them, and I want to say they even use different brakets that help hold them to the frame.
Well, honestly, there is a wire with a round rubber boot about an inch in diameter that fits into a hole in the xfer case just forward of and above the speedo cable, as you are looking from the back of the truck. I didn't know what to think of it either. The only thing I can think of is an idiot light of some sort that lights up on the dash or something. I didn't think that a truck that old had something like that. Hopefully, I can get to the bottom of it, so I guess tomorrow, I will trace it and see where it goes. Thanks for the reply, and if you find anything, let me know.
The wire on the NP 203 is a goes to a simple blue light (about the consistency of the blue light on the intrument panel for when the bright headlights are on) on the bottom dash located just to the lower right of the pull out ash tray. Whenever you shift the NP 203 into the lo-lock or high-lock position, a small blue display will light up the word "LOCK". Now, a lot of these usually were broken off due to the center passenger accendentally kicking them. So yes in a sense it is an idiot light, but I think it is pretty cool when it turns on. I have a 1975 that is very simular to yours. If that little light is missing, there should be a cable wrapped in burlap like fabric under the center of the dash.
Hey thanks. That soes sound pretty cool! I think it might have been broken off, because I don't see one on the dash. You don't by any chance know where I might be able to aquire one would you?
I'm not sure of LMC, Dennis Carpenter, or Auto Crafters has something like that. I'll do some searching around and today I'm going to the local yard to do some shopping. I'll let you know!
