Alright, this is a weird one. It's hard to describe. I hear a noise, mostly when I'm going slow, 5-30 mph. It sort of sounds like a plasticy crackeling, like I'm running over a watter bottle, or a garbage bag flapping in the wind. It happens seemingly randomly, sometimes multiple times in a minute, sometimes not at all for a while. I looked pretty thoroughly under the truck and saw nothing. It sounds sort of like it's coming from the rear. It doesn't sound really bad or internal, but it's annoying. Any ideas?
Thanks!
There's definitely a problem. Now, at random times, there is a rythmic squeal from the right rear. it changes with speed, and is sometimes quiet and sometimes very loud. It almost sounds like a belt squeal, but it isn't, it's coming from the right rear. It doesn't happen all the time, it's comepletely random as far as I can tell. The crunching/slapping noise is getting worse too. Any ideas?
Found it. The lower parking brake assembly with the spring and adjustment piece self-destructed and bits of busted spring were knocking around in the rotor. I guess I'll replace those pieces. Also, while poking around, I took off the end piece that holds the axle shaft, those 8 bolts on the end of the hub. It looks like they had blue locktite on them. Anyone know what they should be torqued to on reinstall?
Thanks

We had a horse trailer do that once on our way to montana, the only time it would make a noise was when you were backing up. when I had my axle apart, I believe I torqued mine to 40 ft-lbs, but it has been a year, but it sounds about right.
Purdy sure camodown had a leaky axle shaft seal that went bad and he did the emergency brakes too with the writeup, you should be cool just doing the brakes but check to see if your cool with your seals.
