I have some ticking I hear after my engine warms to normal operating temp. It sounds a little like valve noise but sometimes it sounds like a slight puffing with it. It's a 2006 4.2 with 25,000 on it. I'm not familiar with the sounds of this motor, could be normal. It doesn't do it when cold and first started. Sounds like it's from driver's side of engine. It's still under warranty so I can take it in. Of course they're gonna tell me it's normal anyway.
I think I remember a few posts about this in the past. I'm thinking it is the oil pump, and if that is your ticking sound, it's not something to worry over.
You might try a mechanic's stethascope to locate the source yourself and then maybe have the dealer check it too.
If I pull up next to a solid wall, like at a fast-food drive through window, I can hear a ticking sound sometimes myself. It's been there for 113,000 miles so I guess it is long past being something to worry about.
As far as a huffing sound, you got me on that one. Not sure what that could be.
I have a "ticking" as well on my 2000 that I can't really pinpoint. It's always worse when cold too. I've been driving it for about 15k miles (since I bought it) with no problems so far. I think it's just a noise these engines make.
The more people I talk to, the more I think it's a normal sound. I've listened to several other trucks with the same engine, and they all have the same degree of noise. As long as there is no problem, I'll get used to it. It's quiet when cold, louder when warming up, and then a little quieter when fully warmed up. All the vehicles I've owned previously have had all kinds of sound deadening pads, etc. I'm probably just hearing what I've never heard before!
Just about the time I had got used to the "noisier than it ought to be" engine in my 2006 V6 5 speed, I solved the problem through blind luck.
Due to an oil leak, the dealer has changed left and right head gaskets and the lower intake manifold gaskets. That problem seems to be solved. I have felt like the engine was noisier than it should be, but I haven't owned a Ford pickup in awhile so I chalked it up to normal noise. So with 27,000 miles, it's now running good with no leaks.
I was cleaning up the engine bay yesterday and discovered that the large rubber boot surrounding the clutch barrell was not installed in the firewall. It was just hanging there on the clutch mechanism swinging in the breeze. I pushed it back up to the firewall and popped it into place. Sounds like a different truck inside now! I feel like a dummy. (The dealer didn't knock the grommet out of place. It has sounded like that since the day I bought it.)
It is amazing how much sound comes through a 3-inch hole in the firewall...
i work for ford thats not a normal sound for the 4.2 while its still under warranty you should take it in
but it is a normal sound if your driving the 5.4 3v
