i am buying my first truck on sat. its a f150 w/320 the rear main leaks i asked around for a price to replace the seal. i had on guy tell me that the 302was noted for the rear bearings going bad and the crank will sag. which the seal would never work. that i would have to have the motor pulled and all new bearings put in. has any one ever heard of this problem before.
Thats a new one on me, never heard of such a thing. Maybe someone else has. What year of truck are you getting? My last truck a 95 F-150 with a 302, the rear main didn't start leaking until about 122k miles were on it, and it wasn't that bad a leak yet. My friends 71 Torino has a 302 with 143k miles, and it doesn't leak at all. I had a rear main replaced one time for $260, but that was on a 2wd truck. I am sure it is more for a 4x4.
thanks for the info.I never heard such a thing either but i thought i would ask any how. I talked to a machine shop today and he said it has happened but not very common. he said there is a way around it with out pulling the motor. you try and get a sleve made for the end of the crank to make up any play in the end of the crank. I did not want to know the price for that. i found a differnt motor any how with about 50000m on it , it will be cheaper then getting the seal replaced if i do the work. so thanks again for the info.
You can purchase one of those sleeves most likely at your local auto parts store. They are inexpensive and fit over the crank where the seal rides to provide a flat surface where there are no grooves and such. But it sounds as if you have found another engine.

thanks for the info i might just see about that. one more question if the sleve wont fit will it need machined by a shop or can i get a honer for it and make it fit. now is there more then on size depending on the amount of play in the crank. would there be noise from the bottom end of the motor, if the bearings are bad.
