97 Expedition 5.4, 4x4 with high mileage (366k). Shift lever O/D indicator light just began flashing. It only does so when overdrive is enabled (O/D ON) after a few miles. Just replaced fluid (Mobil 1 ATF) and filter and it still happens. Does this mean the torque converter lock-up clutch is shot? If so can I simply replace that without rebuilding the entire transmission?
Yes, it's possible. I wouldn't do that on a trans with that many miles, but you certainly can. Once the transmission is out of the truck it isn't that much more to rebuild it.
I bought this truck new and it has spoiled me. Now at 366K, an extra 100,000 miles means nothing. This is the first major driveline item to go. Pulling an overloaded 8000+ pound trailer once and awhile dosen't help. It still runs great otherwise and I've got nothing to loose.
FYI - Items replaced thus far: Alternater, starter, ball joints (twice), front U-joints, left exhaust manifold studs, rear over-axle brake line, fuel pump (@ 330k), several ignition coils (I now keep extra on-hand), and EGR plumbing.
Examples of items never touched: Engine (cam covers & oil pan never removed), Radiater, hoses, water pump, rear U-joints, rear axle, front axle, exhaust (including stock muffler!) and, up to now, the transmission.
E4OD T/C lock-up clutch slips only after Warmed Up
My high-mileage E4OD shifts perfectly thru all gears including lock-up when cold but after about 12 miles, the shift O/D light begins flashing (slip code only) and it resorts to hard-shift mode. Carefully watching the tach, the torque converter locks up fine when starting out cold up until I restart it at normal operating temp. Once at normal operating temp all gears seem to still shift fine but the converter clutch will not engage - I can varry RPMs when underway over 45mph in 3rd or 4th +/-250 RPM. Any ideas on what could be causing this?
With this the only problem I suppose there is no major harm if I do nothing, except burn a little extra fuel on the highway and experience firm shifts. This lets me wait to drop the trans only when something more essential breaks or wears out.
