I searched the forum for this and didn't see any mention of it..... Has anyone installed or seen installed or even heard of being installed... a solenoid valve in place of the manual or cable operated water shutoff valve?
What I am talking about is something similar to these Asco Red Hat valves...
A 12 VDC normally closed unit installed inline on the hose and wired up to a switch either on the dash or tucked up under it, wouldn't take much to do.
ASCO's are premium valves, but even they would be pretty stressed with 200 deg water. No modulation either. Nice idea, tho! If you want to have easy on/off, you could tear the vac operated valve out of a junker and get the temp control slider out of the dash so you could modulate. My Mustang has a nice rotary temp control that would be easy to modify.
Asco is just one brand I looked at there are several out there that are good to over 300F.
Valve doesn't need to be modulated since like the original it is just open or closed. Plus being a NC valve when power is lost the valve automatically closes.
Sounds like an interesting concept. Although I'm not sure that putting one in (with the added electrical wiring and need to have a non stock looking switch) would provide much of an additional advantage over a cable operated valve. You reach down and pull the cable or you reach down and flip the switch?
Also, and perhaps I trying to mind read Ross' mind in his comment about modulating, but the advantage of having a cable operated valve that lets a measured amount of hot water through ie a quasi variable temperature control, wouldn't be of greater benefit than something that runs the heater either "COLD or "HOT." This would be especially true when using defrost in warm humid parts of the country where you only want a tepid defrost.
What kind of $$$$ are we talking about for these things?
See that is the aircraft mechanic/avionics tech in me...wanting to go just one step beyond a manually operated valve..be it by petcock or cable slider.
Prices vary by manufacturer...Asco is top of the line...and can be pricey. But you can pick them up on ebay for a good price.

Vintage Air provides an electrically controlled heater valve.
