Neutral Safety Switch
#16
When parts go obsolete, sometimes they can be bought from FoMoCo Dealers from between dealer net cost ($5.62) and the last MSRP which was $9.36
LMC is asking quadruple MSRP plus...for ONE. They prolly have none, and are only buying it as needed from one of the 65 FoMoCo dealers that still have stock.

1975 Ford F150
Here is the illustration from the Ford parts book, the neutral start switch is basic part number 7A247 and the actuator pin is 7B097. The actuator clips to the shift tube and moves a pin that sticks out of the NSS that is attatched to the steering column with two very short screws (42120-S).

it definately came off if you had the shift tube out
look on the floor, it's just a small kinda U shaped metal part that clips in the slot in the shift tube, no tools, just snap it in by hand, it's not a tight fit and feels loose, the spring in the N/S switch always has pressure on it to hold it in position
after installed, you may need to adjust the N/S switch to start in park and neutral

Brownfoot - I looked on the floor and under the mats last night after reading this original thread. Couldn't find it. I think it may be inside the steering column - taking it all apart again tonight to see. If it's in there I don't want it to bind on anything, maybe causing me more grief later.
Thanks for your reply....bruincup.

So where is this darn thing at? I have a78 f150 custom inline six 300 non tilt steering wheel and auto tranny. With no back up lights. My gear selector is kinda loose as well. Put new engine mounts in, and did the 8lbs in drive hanging from the selector and tightened it back up, but the selector is still loose and no back up lights. Any help,, well would help.

C4 = 11 trans pan bolt holes, C6 has 17 / D8TZ-7A247-A .. C6 NSS (Motorcraft SW-1489) // D8TZ-7A247-B .. C4 NSS (Motorcraft SW-1491).
Optional tilt wheel operated via the T/S handle by pressing it forward. You probably don't have it as you have a Custom. Usually seen only on Ranger XLT's and Lariats.
AMC/GM/ChryCo used a separate lever to operate tilt wheel. No Ford truck has a separate lever until 1992.

My 79 NSS might of went out, would not turn over with the key.Opened the hood and jumped the solenoid, turn over/started.Time to test.Ing switch kind of loose/worn out, solenoid newish (5 years), and the NSS(4years),the last was full of junk(oil, dirt, smagg.)
Auto parts wants 80$,ebay wants 35$ for a NSS for my 79.
May just remove the NSS and connect the wires for start and add a switch for the reverse lights.
I just by passed it

I have a 1967 Mustang neutral safety switch which is mounted on the c4transmission . Presumably it will also mount to the c6. on trucks it is mounted on the column and is a idiotic design because in time you have to dick around with the shift lever to start the truck. Has anyone converted their truck to use the Trans mounted neutral safety /reverse switch? That would sure eliminate a lot of aggravation. My 66 and my moms 76 same problem

In '78 Ford switched to the transmission mounted NSS on the trucks.
Occasionally the trans mounted switch needs to be adjusted too, like the column mounted switch.
If you're having problems with the column mounted NSS, it's simple to adjust. Loosen the two screws that attach it to the column and slide it right or left to adjust, then retighten the two screws.

C4 and C6 NSS look the same but are different.
