Exclamation need opinions on engine options???!!

hi everyone,
i have a 1977 f150 custom its my sons first truck that he bought and we are restoring it ourselves. my question today is that the truck has a 351m in it and im not sure whether if it is better to get a complete engine rebuild kit and give the engine to my local shop and have them put it on or should i buy a re manufactured engine. i have heard a lot of negative and positives about remanufactured engines so any help will be gratefully appreciated, thanks

If you have a good machine shop they should be able to handle it. Check them out through rhe BBB. Also do a walk through and talk with them face to face. This will give you the chance to see how clean they keep things. This is a MAJOR thing.

2x... a clean and well organized shop is an indication of their attention to detail.

A local shop that checks out sounds like a good option. It can be very cost competitive if you/your son do the final dress yourself (manifold, carb, ignition, driven accessories ect.) and if your core engine is not in real bad shape. I too have heard mixed (at best) reviews on parts store re-builds. I believe Jasper engines does a better job and is an option. If you are interested in an upgrade from stock, Tim Meyer sort of specializes in the 351M/400 family. The 351m turns into a 400 with crank and piston upgrade and can be plenty healthy.

I run the 400 variant of that engine in a '78 F250. Does pretty well stock with 4.10's and 31" tires.

My son and I built his first truck. A 78 Ford F150 4X4 with a 351 that got 7 miles to the gl. When it was $3.?? a gl. it was rough. He is off in collage, long story short, I just put a 2002 5.4L with 112,000 in it with the overdrive trans, new radiator, & fuel system. The truck is now so much fun to drive and getting 14 miles to the gl. Total cost was right at $3,500. With help from my friends shop that I paid for. It's like jumping into a new old truck. Something to think about.
