Heater Control valve

Where is the heater control valve on the 66 F100 fresh air heater? I have had my truck for 2 years now, and had it completely apart (frame-off resto-mod) but this is one thing that has eluded me. Is it on the heater or on the heater line in? If it was cable operated, that cable is long gone.

My heater core is leaking currently right at the firewall, and I figure while its apart I may as well fix the reason why its even harder to stay cool inside on 90 degree days.

The deluxe fresh air heater has two cables attached to a bracket under the dash, to the right of the steering column. One of these cables opens/closes the heater water valve.

The economy fresh air heater does not have the two cables under the dash, so it does not have a heater water valve. It uses a manually operated heater water shut-off valve instead.

Both these valves are located in the same location: Midway along the right (passenger) side inner fender apron, are spliced into the inlet to heater core heater hose.

What usually happens is: The valve rusts out, people don't know where to get one, so they eliminate it.

ok, thanks. I guess mine is just the economy then, since it just has the one cable that goes from the dash switch to the air valve. But now I do have a use for that pesky clutch cable once again!

Or what will more likely happen is just the valve under the hood.

One thing I recomend...given that these valves rarely get moved typically...usually full on...go under the hood and rotate it in the desired direction...if you reef too hard pushing the cable from the inside, you can easily kink the cable at the water valve...junk cable then...you can also push the cables housing out of the crimped area that the **** end is secured to the dash or lower mounting bracket by.

Since those valves don't usually get moved very often, it would likely be advisable to operate the valve periodically, like once a month or so, just so it doesn't get rusted up or froze up in place. A squirt of WD40 on the exterior would also be a good thing. To keep it working well, is another reason to perform a a regular or bi-annual coolant flush & change to keep the heater valve working as designed from the inside.

My heater hose valve was already missing when I bought the truck and I decided not to buy a new one (or replace it with a household plumbing stop valve - yes, I've seen that before). One less thing to worry about....

I rebuilt my heater this winter after it started leaking. I replaced all the hoses, water pump (may have been overkill), thermostat, heater hoses and put a repop manual valve in on the heater inlet hose on the fender apron, where it had previously been removed and not replaced. BTW it's a 240 I-6.

This summer I was rewarded for my attention to the original design as the cab would get quite warm after running for 15 minutes. After cooling down a quick spin on that valve made for much more comfortable travel. It's not terribly expensive, needs little attention, easy to install...well worth the comfort.

Does anyone have a part number and/or source for the cable and **** that controls the in-line heater coolant valve? Searched a bunch of related threads but couldn't find any numbers for this cable in particular.

I searched on heater cable 18518 (base part number) and came up with this as well as a couple of others. This one applies to 1965/66 F100/1000 so something like, say, a 1966 F350 would fall under that category.

Here is my 64 valve for reference. Also, I use a small amount of marine grease on mine on the outside. When I purchased the truck, it would not even move. Pulled it, cleaned it, and lubed it up, works great now.

If I'm seeing that clearly that looks pretty good how it bolts to the apron and has a 90 in the valve. I like that style. The 1966 original types are a straight body, no 90 degree bend, and just floats in midair not attached to anything other than the hoses and the cable. It works, but I've always thought it an odd design. Is yours original 1964 style or do you think it is adapted from something else?

Yes you are seeing it as that way. Yea not a good pic, had to crop it. Yes it is original equipment. It looked pretty bad till I cleaned it up. Here is one on Ebay, but my gosh...I think that is expensive...Probably get it soemwhere else cheaper???
