First post. I've recently acquired a 1970 longbed 2wd bump. I would like to install power steering on it, but don't know where to start. I found the thread for 4x4s, but it doesn't apply. Searched for info and either it's so simple to do any idiot can do it, or not a common conversion? It'd be great to have a parts truck to pull everything off of, don't have that. What do I need?
Steering box from any Ford F series up to 79 you also need the drag link pitman arm and possibly the column not a 100% on the last one though, also steering pump and the crank pully, water pump pullyand you will also need power steering lines. I think that about covers it.

1969 F100 from serial number D96,001, 1970/72 F100 uses Ford P/S as do 1973/79 F100's (all 2WD's).
1969/72: The steering column is different with P/S because the steering shaft is shorter (34 5/16" vs 35 5/8" with M/S), as is the shift tube and mast jacket.
If you can find a 1969 from serial number D96,001, 1970/72 F100 with P/S, everything swaps over.
While 1973/79 is similar, more modifications are necessary to make this swap.
The serial number is the last 6 digits of the VIN.
i put p/s on my truck. the only real problem i had was the column was too long. luckily, i found a '71 parts truck that had p/s. the rest was fairly easy.
Thanks for the input. It sounds a little more involved than I had hoped, but certainly do-able. I haven't seen the steering ram I'm accustomed to Ford using mentioned. I guess I'll start checking with my local junkyard to see if they have a complete truck.
Rookie question: Can the parts I need only come from an F100, or can I pull parts from a bigger truck? I would guess any truck with an FE would be able to supply me with pulleys, brackets and p/s pump, as well as a steering column. Steering parts will be F100 only? What about the steering box?
Any 2wd powersteering box from a 73-79 will work. It's the tall style one. As for conecting to your column delete the rag joint connection and weld a splined ujoint conection on the end of the shaft that will mount to box. Make it to the length you need with some 5/8 round bar. You'll have to box the inside of the frame in with a 3/8 plate and the 3 holes to mount the box.

A P/S ram (and related control valve) were only used with Power Assist P/S on 1973/77 4WD's.
2WD's have integral P/S, everything is inside the gearbox. There is no separate ram cylinder and control valve.
Integral: Two P/S hoses, one pressure, one return...route from the P/S pump to the P/S gearbox.
Power Assist: Two hoses, pressure and return, route from the P/S pump to the P/S control valve. Two short P/S hoses route from the control valve to the ram cylinder.
Power Assist P/S uses a manual steering gearbox, because it has nothing to do with the P/S system.
