Normal play in the wheel i 1.25 inches or 5/8 each way. Adjusting the pre load only masks the wear. They were not meant to run this long and sometimes well over 100K which is well past the mechanical limits. A rebuild is available but it is costly.

To see of it is king pins jack the front and move the wheels while some one holds the steering wheel you will be amazed at the play in the tie rods and drag link.

I've been dealing with "sloppy" steering for like ten years. I just recently replaced the tie rods and drag link....it tightened everything up. It drives so much better, I feel like a complete idiot for not replacing them sooner. (it's never been a daily driver)

All the internal steering gearbox parts are obsolete, but all can still be found at Ford Dealers/obsolete parts vendors.

The usual cause for slop in the gearbox is the sector shaft bushing (B8A3576A = 1961/64).

There's only one, it's the same as passenger cars, and it's a "weak sister." By the time 40,000 miles rolls around, it's time for a new one.

If it were my truck, I'd just replace the bushing, the sector shaft seal (C7OZ3591A), and housing gasket (C3AZ3581A).

The costs for these three parts will be minimal, and this is a simple gearbox to work on. If additional parts are required, they can be found and are EZ to install.

Ditto, but 1966 F250 2WD's with M/S have 2 sector shaft bushings (C1AZ3576B).

Note that this is a different part [number] than 1961/64's (B8A3576A) use.

The seal and gasket are the same.

Both numbers are obsolete from Ford, but a number of dealers still show to have them in stock. Your dealer should be able to get them for you.

I do have manual steering boxes from '54 and '57 F100's...my question is would either one of these work for my '64?
No.

C3TZ3504U .. Manual Steering Gearbox / Obsolete (no one has any).

Fits: 1961/64 F100/250 2WD.

Why would you want to install another used steering gear?

It will not be any better....it could be worse.

NEW old stock genuine Ford parts can be found for your present gearbox, I've done this for members here dozens of times.

Usually just replacing these bearings, races and the bushing will make a world of difference.

You can install just these parts and see what happens.

If the play is still apparent, then you will have to replace the steering shaft and the sector shaft.

This is a very simple box to work on...I've overhauled dozens like this.

If a klutz like I can do...anyone can.
