I am currently driving m '64 F100 everyday to work about 80 mile round trip. The only thing I dont likeis that my steering box has to much slack and cant be adjusted out. I do have manual steering boxes from '54 and '57 F100's................my question is would eitherone of these work for my '64?

 

i have a 64 f250 and i believe the steering box from the earlier trucks are different mines the recirculating ball type and the earliers i believe were gemmer gear

 

C3TZ3504U .. Manual Steering Gearbox / Obsolete (no one has any).

Fits: 1961/64 F100/250 2WD.

Why would you want to install another used steering gear?

It will not be any better....it could be worse.

NEW old stock genuine Ford parts can be found for your present gearbox, I've done this for members here dozens of times.

Usually just replacing these bearings, races and the bushing will make a world of difference.

You can install just these parts and see what happens.

If the play is still apparent, then you will have to replace the steering shaft and the sector shaft.

I will also be rebuilding my steering box soon thanks for the part numbers. Iwas looking at the service manual and I don't see what kind of oil or grease it should use. I thought I'd ask what you used in your rebuilds?

Ever find out what grease to use. I heard grease is better than oil due to leaking problems. I removed my box and cleaned it out and need to refill it also .

 

XG1C replaced C3AZ19578A .. Steering Gear Lubricant (Motorcraft XG1C) / Available from Ford.

This is grease and since it comes in a cardboard tube, it ain't gear oil!

You should be able to buy this at any autoparts store because Ford has used the same stuff for decades.
