Superchips for a 7.3

I have heard that a superchips programmer is not good for my 02 f250 7.3. That's a rumor I heard. What yall think?

I've heard the same thing, after I already had the SC handheld for two years. IMO, if your going to spend 399.00 or around that range, get a custom tune from several of the top tuners out there, DP, PHP, T. WILDMAN just to name a few. Believe me, its a world of difference.

Been running one on mine since 2002. You get what you pay for and what I have read on this site is there are differences among programmers and chips, with the cream of the crops being custom.

Well I havE the chance to pick one up for real cheap. A friend of mine knows a guy selling his and he said he will let me have it for cheap. 150 dollars. I was just curious if I should steer clear of it. I mean superchips seems to be a big name and I'm not wanting a heck of a lot more performance. My truck already gets me in enough trouble lol. Supposed to help fuel economy too

I see you already have an edge programmer. The same guy that wrote the superchips tunes is the same guy that wrote the edge tunes. If I were you I would pass on the superchips.

Superchips eliminates gear "fishing" of transmission. It also delivers a crisp gear change.

Well I need to change that edge programmer. I sold it about 5 months ago cause I was short on cash and just returned to stock. That's why I was looking at the superchips. I have 200k on my truck so I really don't want to get something that's not good for it

Getting a nice custom tune for your truck even at your mileage wouldn't hurt, the tuners take mileage and what you want in consideration. The SuperChips at the time worked for me, firmed up the shifts and what power it did produce was good at the time. One great thing the SC is good for is the code reading it does. I still have mine for reading codes and my wifes 97 Expy and anybody else that needs help with codes. Make sure the code book comes with your purchase if you can, if not, I'm sure you could download the codes sheet somewhere.

Who? The guy who does the tuning that you're currently looking into .

To the OP,

Here's a quick, dirty rundown.
The quick and easy way to put this about the older Superchips flash programmer (if it's a 1705 model) is that it does what it says it will do. It makes power as advertised. It adds fuel, it firms up the shift points, cleans up the injection control pressure desired map a bit, and slightly increases the start of injection based on oil temperature and injection pressure. Transmission shift points are going to be near-stock. There is a slight chance that the programming was written by the same guy who wrote the calibrations on the older Edge Evolution.

The older "Game Boy" Edge Evolution was a step in the right direction compared to the older Superchips programming. SOI was increased a little bit (which makes for the louder tunes comparing them side by side to the SC) so engine efficiency was increased. Transmission pressures were increased a bit more (so they did have much firmer shifts which are bothersome but better for the transmission), and the shift points were changed to better match the powerband of the engine.

In either case, you really can't go wrong. There are things that you are going to like about one and not the other since there is a more apparent aggressiveness to the Evolution both in accelerator pedal feel and shift firmness. For all intents and purposes, and all else remaining equal, the Evo should give you better fuel economy while driving down the highway. I would give the driveability nod to the Superchips though since the shifting is going to be a bit more comfortable and the accelerator pedal shouldn't be as touchy.

If you must go with a programmer, $150 for the Superchips isn't a bad price at all and as long as you can drive like a sane person, it should pay for itself in a short amount of time with fuel savings. If you're used to the way your truck shifts now and can live with it, you will not notice much change except for a small increase in shift firmness.

Good luck.

I run a Super Chip and like it a lot. It paid for itself very quickly and I have put 80,000 miles on my truck since I bought the SC. Shifts so much better than stock and the Hight Proformence mode and pull mode works for me just great. Shifts nice and smooth and my MPG increased a lot.

would I change? I see no big reason to....

Kdokey I had a superchip 1705 in my truck before . To it seem to be okay, if you are worried about breaking things I would stay with superchip. I think the superchip will be fine IMO. I had no problems with it .
