Went and looked at a 94 f150 xlt, 4.9l, 5 speed, 2 wheel drive and noticed that the speedo, odometer and gas gauge don't work. give me some good ideas where to start looking if I buy this truck. If I need to replace the gauge cluster is it something I can do or is it best left to the dealer?
Cluster is EASY to do. I've yanked mine a few times, did it yesterday actually. All I use to pull it is a prybar for the trim (feel like I'll break it if I yank by hand), and a Stanley ratcheting screwdriver set with a bunch of bits from Wal-Mart. Don't mess up the printed circuit on back of the cluster. Detach the speedo cable from it first then the two connectors.
If the truck runs and drives but the fuel gauge doesn't work, it's either the sending unit that is on the pump, or the cluster's gauge. If it is dual tank, try switching from front to rear and see if the gauge starts working.
As far as the speedo and odometer, you have to pull the cluster to see if the cable is connected. If so, problem is the speedo gear in the tranny UNLESS the cable has been broken in two somewhere haha.
BTW, my truck is older (87), I'm just assuming not much changed. Should still be a cake walk.
