I'm looking at buying a '93 F350 crew cab with 7.3L , 5 speed 2wd. The truck is very cheap$1500 (great body, I'd figure worth more than what they ask) but it has a tranny issue the owner says has been there for 7 years without getting worse.
The issue is that the transmission will not go into reverse unless you shut the truck off. It will then shift out of reverse fine to go into forward gears, but again, will not go into reverse without shutting the engine off.
I really setteled for a truck I just bought (5.8 crew with auto) and this truck looks great for the money, but has anybody had this issue and is it an expensive problem to get fixed at a tranny shop?
I think I read on thedieselstop.com, somewhere, although I cant for the life of me find the thread, that 5th and reverse share a synchro. Reading at that forum I also found that in many people's cases that problem has been solved by replacing a number of things such as bushings, and clutch slave cylinder or lines. Even found one trick on that site that said to try engaging fifth then right to reverse, I'll try that out when I go inspect it on sunday.
well, went to see, and buy, the truck today. I tried the half way into 5th then into reverse and it was grinding, which is more that it does by not trying that trick at all. If they lived 7 years with the truck doing that I think I can live with it for a while.
On a side note, the truck is in very good shape for the price. Got it for 1500$, a 1993 7.3L 5 speed XLT crew cab with all the power accessories working and even the AC. Still has belly bars on it too so I may look for a cheap camper.
I would look into the cost of having it repaired, then compare that cost to buying a good, used tranny and see how it works out. My guess is the used tranny will be cheaper, especially if you swap them yourself- try to look for one at a reputable junk yard and see if the yard offers any kind of replacement warranty on it.
Hydraulic Clutch Troubleshooting .: Articles Have a read here. You should not get grinding going into reverse unless the clutch is dragging so check out that article. However the problem may disappear with a bit of driving as the clutch gets cleaned.
