My public library has the shop manuals to lend. I use them quite a lot when I have a problem to diagnose. Helm Publishing is who prints them for the manufacturers for purchase. Chilton and Motor also publish manuals using the same data that the Ford manuals use. They can be purchased on CD or book form. They sure save a lot of time.
Ive found many vacuum leaks using brake clean. Lightly spray it around the throttle body and intake manifold. If you have a leak youll hear the engine idle,go up noticeably. Go lightly with it. Make sure you get the flammable brake clean. Not the safest way but i guarantee if you have a leak somewhere youll find it this way. Have you checked fuel pressure yet?
Listen for hissing noises under the hood, wiggle vacuum lines to see if noise/idle changes. Pay close attention to the intake gasket and PCV system. Can also use brake parts cleaner, carb cleaner or propane to locate. If the engine revs up while you're spraying an area it is getting into the engine. DO NOT get carried away if using a liquid spray! Use lightly in suspected areas only. Keep in mind that you're using something flammable on a running engine. My favorite leak detection tool is a smoke machine for EVAP systems but I'm guessing you don't have one of those laying around the house.
If you can't find any leaks that would be a good time to find a good diagnostic shop. Good being the key word there. I worked on a Taurus one time that the owner had at 3 different shops. They had put on a total of 6 02 sensors and a MAF sensor for a lean condition. 15 minutes monitoring fuel trims and then hooking up a smoke machine led me to his vacuum leak they never even looked for and I'm far from a genius. Those places apparently just didn't care.
Thank You so much! Truck is doing much better, don't guess you are anywhere close to by to do some final work on this truck. Got 207K miles and still running better than a new one

I am not so sure of my ability to do this safely. Uh how would I check the fuel pressure? Sorry real bust here at fixing anything
I was having the same surging while in gear that you described. Did you ever resolve the issue?
I was not able to resolve the issue. The "seafoam" does help at first but now it is back to surging maybe even worse. I just bought a new truck and use my old one on the farm now.
Having the same problem with my 2004 Heritage 6 cylinder. Runs fine but when I come to a stop it surges jumps and acts like it still wants to go forward. I put it in park and it settles down. A car salesman said it was a computer chip that controls the throttle. What is the best recommendation I am a bust at fixing things but advice on what to do truck has 205,000 miles but still runs strong other than this issue.
I'm not sure if the 2004 and 2001 6 cylinders are the same but on my 2001 the problem was easy to fix. It would be easier for me to explain if I could post pictures. If you remove the top half of the intake you will see what looks like box with 2 metal rods ,one going to each side of the engine.(left bank and right bank) The rod on the right bank on my engine had fallen off. I picked up the plactic clip (part number 47099) that holds it in place from local part store. I hope I made some sense and the info helps. Less than $40 for all parts intake gaskets and the clips.
