My friend at work is having a problem with a 1998 Ford Ranger. Just had a little brake work done and since it was returned, there has been a popping or thumping noise coming from the right front wheel area. This only occurs when you hit the brakes.
UPDATE: I just talked to my friend with the brake problem and took a ride in the truck. The problem doesn't seem to be a brake problem to me at all. It is more obvious when brakes are applied, but it also happens when you hit bumps or turn the wheels hard one way. This truck is lowered and looks like it has a big toe in problem. Could something loke the camber be out of adjustment causing it to do this? I'm thinking more along the lines of suspension related now. Any thoughts?

Ford Ranger - poping/creaking when brakes applied or hit a bump
Im having exact same problem. My 97 Ranger 75k miles has stated poping when I hit the brakes going fwd only and really pops and creeks when I go over like a speed bump.
-When parked I tried bouncing the front on both sides (front or back) - it does NOT make the noise when you do this and shocks seem to be working ok
-I also inspected both front brakes.. they appear to be in good shape and I could not get it to make any noise when you turn the wheel and hit the brakes when its jacked up.
-I just put new tires on and had the lugs torqued - noise is still there.
-It appears that the noise is coming from the suspension or under the vehicle.
Wondering if it may be a bushing in the suspension or perhaps a broken motor mount.

Any ideas? Thanks
Welcome to FTE! Is your truck a 4x4 or 4x2?
Doesn't necessarily have to be a brake issue. For example, generally speaking, a worn control arm bushing and/or ball joint may pop as the brakes are applied. The weight of the vehicle holds the arm securely in place until a greater force (braking) moves it, creating the pop.
THanks for you help. My Ranger is a 2 wheel dr. I think I figured out that the noice is coming from the "Radius Bar" bushings. I put some WD40 on them and it seems to help the noice. I tried tightening but dont have a big enough wrench. Need to get a larger socket and use a cheater bar to see if I can tighthen a little more. They probably just need to be replace, but look to be in ok shape as they are not cacked. Looks like according to the Haynes manual there is an outer bushing and an inside bushing that goes through the a bar mounted on the frame.
Thanks again.
