I've noticed a rather loud "clunk" noise from the underside of my '97 Expy- but only when it rains or is wet outside. Basically, when you accelerate hard enough you get one "clunk," and then as you brake hard, you get a companion "clunk" (almost as if something is shifting on the bottom of the chassis). For a while, I thought it might be the aftermarket tubular steps I installed, but they are as solid as a rock. You can sort of feel the "clunk," but it doesn't feel like a tranny clunk (how's that for precise description)...
BTW, thanks for the information posted on this site! So far, I've been able to figure out an ignition problem, settled a cosmetic issue with some trim, noted with disdain that my plan to find an EB Expy with the compass, etc. and strip it for my own XLT will NOT work, and gotten info on modifying the filter housing...

My Excursion made a clunk like your Expy. Turned out to be a bad driveshaft. Slip yoke splines were worn. But mine did it all the time. Guess you could crawl under and feel for excessive play...

I dont know what year your Expy is, mine is a 2001. Mine has the A4WD feature. Yesterday when I was driving on snow and ice (the wheels were slipping), I noticed a definate engagement noise (thud/clunk??) when the A4WD would kick in. It is the first time I have actually used this, I normally just manually change it to 4WD, but I wanted to check it out.
Don't know if this is your circumstance, just a shot.
Thanks for the suggestions so far. I've had a driveshaft clunk before (in a '65 Mustang, ah... miss that car), and this is more of a "click" that feels/sounds like it is located somewhere on the driver side towards the back. I did crawl up underneath and tested the driveshaft, seems tight.
I washed my Expy down today (btw, its a 4.6L 4x2), and as usual sprayed up under the frame... Sure enough, the first time I floored it after washing, there was a "click" followed by a weak one when I stopped hard- after that, nothing more.
I'm beginning to wonder if there could be a bushing or other suspension component going bad? Perhaps when the water gets in there, it allows it to slip just enough to make the click/clunk sound?
BTW, I tried the silicone sealer trim treatment suggested in another thread on the faded trim beneath my windows... simply amazing! One tip though, heat the silicone up with hot water!
I would like to reopen this issue of anyone has any further information. I have had the same problem only when its wet out and have not been able to find the cause for years on my 97'. The click or pop feels like it comes from the rear back... Possibly the brakes. So far I have replaced all 4 shocks, brake pads, upper lower front ball joints, front upper control arm, a tierod, a universal joint, lubed the splines, front sway bar links, and changed the rear differential fluid which needs to be done again. Nothing. I too am wondering if it is worn out bushing or possibly the rear control arms. One more piece of info is it doesn;t happen when going in reverse.
i have that problem too when i go to the car wash or when it rains. the clunk is followed by other weird noises almost like an electrical short of some sort? i have an 03 navi??
