No spark 8 & 1

302 v8 in my 73 Mustang with points dizzy. I have no fire from the distributor cap on plugs 8 and 1 and I've changed the cap, rotor, readjusted the points and checked for fire on the points when the dizzy is pointing to no.8. I first replaced plugs and wires and switched with other cylinders, but that didn't help. No fire from either wire with the other one (8 or 1) removed as they are adjacent on the cap. Do I need a different distributor or what?
It starts ok for 6cyl

is the distributor cam that the points ride on worn down on the 8 & 1 lobes?
can you move the distributor shaft side-to-side more than just a small amount?

dizzy cam lobes are all the same looking and there is a small amount of side to side movement, but I've seen worse and ran ok. I'm ready to try another coil at this point, but don't ask me why.

How are you checking for spark on 1 and 8?

I was checking spark by using a timing light, but I just came in to say that I fixed it by adjusting the points gap down to a tight .015 and its purring like a kitten.

That's a hint that the distributor indeed may have some wear in it, and the cam lobes/shaft in the dist may be wobbling around, and not pushing the points open in certain places.

Can that be fixed with a new bushing in the dizzy?

Yes, I have a book "How to Rebuild your Small Block Ford" that explains how to rebuild the dist, but i have never done it and don't know where you would get the parts. You probably could find them over the internet if you hunted around. But sometimes the local stores will surprise me with what they carry, so I would check there first(check online at Autozone or someplace like that).
