intermittent battery problem/no start
06 F-350 crew, lariat, diesel. one day at ramdom the truck will not start, dead batteries. Jump start and it could be fine for days or weeks. I noticed after a boost the battery has 12.4 volts or so. If I start loading up accessories then shut them down, it will get between 13.8 to 14.3 after a few minutes. If the truck sits more than 24 hours, it definately needs a jump. In 08 I replaced both batteries with the best and biggest Sears offered thinking like I might have bad cell in one of them.
My gut feeling is either a drain ( like a short to ground) or a bad regulator.
I haved never played electrician on a truck but I own a nice Fluke digital meter.
Can someone please tell me what to look for and what to test???????

I assume I am going to check between the large terminal of the alternator and the negitive post of one of the batteries. Is that correct? What should the alternator output voltage be and should it be constant or can it be variable? If it can be variable, what range should I be looking for?
Once again your help is greatly appreciated.
But you should be getting around 12.6 but the key is not voltage, but voltage under load.. you either have a proper load tester or you get a shop that has one to do it for you.
