2nd post. found I had a dead battery on my 92 F-150 V-8. Took It to Sears had battery checked out and was told it was good. Replaced it any way. Owned truck 1 1/2 yrs looked pretty bad. Installed new battery and truck started right up but won't stay on. Wants to stall I have to keep my foot on the gas. Found air and breather element dirty replaced. gave up for the day. After work today went out to start the truck found battery dead. Nothing at all. Jumped it and it started right up but same issues. Had a problem with my power window driver side not working once and a while but never had problem with battery before. It would stop working for a day or so then come back. Its been out a coulpe days could this be draining the battery. In an earlier post someone asked if the altanator was charging or not. Somebody I worked with said to check it by disconnecting the positive terminal and checking the voltage across the lugs. When I tried this the engine stalled out. Any help would be appreciated I'm in between jobs can't afford to take it to the mechanics. Thanks
First I'd check the voltage across the battery terminals. With the engine off, it should read 12 volts fully charged. Start the engine and recheck. If the alternator is working it should read 13+ volts.
I think it's more likely that you have dirty and/or loose battery cables. Clean the connections on the connection at the terminals and has a tight fit on the battery. Also, make sure that the ground wire is clean where it attaches to the block.
13.6volts to 14 volts DC on the battery with engine running 1500 RPMS. IF, that is OK, Turn on every electrical accessory to high, and the voltage should not go below 13 to 13.2 volts. If that is OK, then carefully wiggle each connection you can safely reach in order to reproduce stalling.
The stalling you speak of confuses me, because most trucks can run off plain old battery juice for a while. I'm not sure if the alternator can keep the engine going by itself, that is, if the battery terminal becomes dislodged, the alternator output may shunt to zero for some reason.
Can you hear a bad hum on the AM radio as the engine is revved?
My alternators died often in my 92 and that was a big sign, all of the sudden I could hear an electrical hum on AM and sometimes even FM.
You may have to bite the bullet on this alternator, I have read( and heard)too many bad things about the 1992 2nd gen alternators. They are too small and overworked.
