Bobby's reference shows thickness at 3/4", I think I read 7/8" somewhere. I'll measure before planing too much, and suppose that thicker would just raise the plane of the bed, the rabbet would just need to be calculated accordingly. Nifty that the beds have different layout for wood and strips, and that the 'water shedding rabbet was used' - probably up north where its colder and more snow.
I'm actually looking forward to the woodwork - not the bolt bustin'.
I went to Lowes and bought oak boards that were the correct width and thickness. I cut the rabbit edges on my table saw. I have some pics in my gallery.
I found a local millwork to plane the rough lumber. some of it is more than an inch thick. They'll also cut to width. Fee will be less than a new set of planer blades.
Ready to router the edges on my oak now. Will get some pics.
Bought new strips and bolts. Bustin' all the old ones except for those doggone bed to fram bolts. Any tips on getting those loose? Thought I'd pull them, lift off the bed and then get off the other strip bolts.
Broke out the torch, but no acetylene ugh. Sprayed about 1/2 can of WD40 on them and me and the garage floor so far. Used a ground off 3/8 extension in the square peg bolt head, but no joy.
