DEF - where ??

Diesel Exhaust Fluid....
Where do I buy it at ??
I checked the local Kragen auto parts store and the guy thought I was joking. I still don't think he believes me even after I tried to explain it...

Just picked up a SD and was trying to find a source for the DEF, but don't need it today.

Dealer...

Do a search, you will find plenty of truck stops that carry it.

Lots of places carry it, but the trick is to find it at a reasonable price.

From what I understand If the truck is under emmissions warranty the dealer is responsible for the fluid. That is a federaly mandated thing.

Thank you for all the info...
Probably should have put that I am in Orange County, CA... nearest truck stop is 80 miles away.

The other website shows a truck large truck facility about 8 miles away. They are listed as selling it in the jug.

I would be interested to hear about a dealership paying to refill the DEF... I can't see them doing that willingly.
If a person did have to buy it at the dealer I can only imagine it would be stupid expensive.

Just curious, but how often does one need to fill up one's truck with this magic tailpipe fluid?

No chance of that happening unless you bought a service plan when the truck is purchased.

According to the chief engineer, Chris Brewer, the interval for most should be around 7500 miles, or at every oil change.

The Motorcraft part number is PM-27-J it is a 2.5 gallon jug with a filler nozzle, Ford retail is $19.59. The fluid shelf life is as follows:

Oh, and i almost forgot! Most dealers should have purchased the Urea in 55gal drums, not sure on the pricing since the 6.7L owners in there area are yet to come in for top off or even service, to early to tell but i'm sure Big Blue will set some kind of low flat rate to fill the fluid.

So i read this thread and decided to google DEF and do some reading...

came accross this:

Interestingly, GM representatives also tell us that they had a bit of a back-and-forth with the Feds regarding how best to handle the required refilling of the diesel exhaust fluid tank, which won't run dry until about 5,000 miles. It seems that when the truck gets dangerously low on the exhaust treatment, its speed will be capped at 55 miles per hour. If you run out, the computer nannies will keep you to just a four mph crawl so that you'll never be stranded completely. Want more? Check out our gallery of high-res images below and click here for the rest of the details.

You have to be joking... i can understand a check engine light or something being triggered by low DEF, but capping speed to 4mph? That IS basically stranded. Does Ford do this too?

It goes to idle only. And it does give you plenty of warning beforehand.

Nope! Its just like oil and fuel, it gets consumed with driving. I think they'll help with the first fill up, but after that, you're on your own. GM does the same thing, and Dodge has some contraption called a NOX trap.
