I have an '05 with 77,000 miles on it. I don't use the tailgate everyday, so it stays closed and locked most of the time. I used it yesterday and had trouble opening it. I unlatched it had to force it open. Then when I closed it, it made this loud bang. I have removed it, put grease on the pins, and sprayed the hinge with P.B. blaster but it still makes the banging noise. Any ideas??
The tail gat does remove from the bed...I would remove, degrease, inspect for damage (bent pins, etc.) relube and install (including latches, lock, etc.)
For some reason my eyes read it was a 1985.....you should be able to inspect & lube without removal. With an older truck with unknown history, I would also then remove it for a full inspection.
I had the exact same thing happen when I test drove my truck. The dealer said they lubed it and it has worked perfect ever since. Dont know exactly what they did.
This is currently happening with my tailgate as well. I think I'll bring it to the dealer soon and ask them what's going on. Especially since my glove-box also falls out whenever I open it.
Mine does this too. It's got something to do with the drivers side hinge. It seems to bind sometimes. I've tried cleaning it, lubing it with teflon, etc. Nothing works for very long. I have noticed that when it free's up it will stay quiet until I put something heavy on the gate. Then it's back for a while.
I'm thinking of removing the gate so I can pull the hinge and the torsion bar. The service manual shows that sometimes you have to drill a hole in the gate on the opposite side to allow you to bang the torsion bar out. Another one of Ford's bright ideas....
Mines been doing this since last summer, I may just ignore it. It's only a loud noise that doesn't hurt anything.
