I did not do the downpipe yet. The local diesel shop said to wait and see how the exhaust pans out. I did get a bigger trans cooler installed last year. I think it made a big difference. I don't really want to mess up the firewall w/ installing a new DP. Can't afford to have it done either, that's why I did what I can do. When I can afford to I will have the DP done and some other stuff. But for now I guess I will just drive it. Thanks for all the info
the firewall modification is really simple, it's just bending the seem out of the way. I cut the seem in a couple places and bent it, took less than a half hr for me
You don't need to modify the actual firewall much at all. Just cut the little seam in two places and bend it up out of the way. New 2 piece 3" downpipe can be bought for less than $100. To install just need a sawzall with some good quality long blades and basic tools. Got my DP from Bean's Diesel. Installed in about 3 hours or less.
IMO aftermarket exhaust is worthless without upgrading the downpipe.
