I was driving my 6.0L up a 5-6% grade towing my trailer (18k weekend warrior) the other day. I don't have any mods other than an SCT I run in unlimitted tow (matt's tunes) , straight pipe exhaust, EGR delete SGII and other gauges.
Some of the hills are LONG pulls some up to 5-10 miles and I don't try to hammer the ***** out of my truck but I just want more usable power that won't burn up my truck and allow me to not be "THAT" guy impeding traffic in the slow lane and ruining it for all the truckers lining up behind him.
Aside from studs what else have you guys done to have the ability to pull these types of hills/grades @ 60+ MPH?
I have an idea a turbo and nozzles are in order but want to hear it from those (exact power combos used) that pull heavy and maintain speeds up big grades.
...and please don't tell me to get a smaller trailer LOL
Even with a loss of MPGs unloaded (going from 3.37s to 4.30s pulling 18k might break even or net you a gain, or might save your trans) you'll need to burn a lot of diesel to cover $1k-1500 for a turbo plus $400 a stick for bigger injectors. Plus you won't burn up the engine or trans as fast.

OOOOps forgot to say I run 37's but already geared the truck with 4.56's. I don't like to full throttle the truck up those hills and keep my EGT's under 1100 at all times. As soon as it gets close I let off a bit.
Maybe I mispoke in the original post. I bet if I hammered the $h*t out of the throttle I would probably be ok but I just don't like doing it....do you guys do it?

Thats funny Benny.....nah no boat behind it, it would put me over length....I would if I could!!!!!
Holy $h*t my brother....just noticed you busted 10k posts! Nice
You can pull all day Long with your pyro at as high as 1250. I would probably let her go as high as 1200 for sustained pulls. Ussually, though, at sustained 1250 on the pyro your oil temp and water temps become the issue. If you do turbo and sticks, you are going to still be liiited to 1250 pyro, so, there really isn't a lot of point for pulling. You will also need a new completely custom tune for these mods. I would also make sure your oil cooler is up to snuff and do EGR bypass for these types of towing tunes. For 18000 lbs I doubt you will change much without going into a bigger truck with much more gearing and motor for sustained pulling. Your are making her work for it pretty hard.
Ummm, I'm gonna stick my neck out here and ask how attached are you to those 37" tall tires? Understand I'm a bit biased as I've never lifted any of my trucks or ran bigger than stock wheels and tires. Not that I've never been tempted to do so. I'm just too cheap.
The 4.56's offset the tire diameter choice just fine. If I decrease in size I'll be driving down the road @ 3500 rpm unloaded.....not what I am looking for.
My son has 4.56 gears with 35 tires and pulls his 16K toy hauler just fine. He turns the same RPM's I do with stock 235 tires, dually, 4.10 gears with my F350 7.3L . So I'd say you still need lower gears if you run those 37 tires. 18K is a lot of weight. I bet he pulling close to 18K also. He puts a rhino and razar in the back with two small quards.
That is the other option for sure. For the sake of conversation...... if I considered adding a VGT powermax (Matt's tunes) and lets just say 155cc injectors, keep the IC stock...... what type of towing performance could I expect.
