A coworker went to the local Mustang performance shop and obtained a tuning chip for his stock diesel F-250 Ford pickup truck. The GPS had the damn thing up to 160 MPH on the interstate on the way to work. Just after dawn on a rural stretch. His petrol Ram is supposed to make better with a similar chip he purchased but only to 140 so far.
So this was posted on another site...and I thought I would ask the pro's if this is possible..?
I've read a few threads on here and have my own opinion on this...
I don't see it unless the transmission/rear end gearing has been modified. Most of us run 1750-2000 rpm's at 72 MPH. It would take at least 4500 rpm's to make excess of a measly 150. MAYBE you could run the diesel that high for a brief stint but it would not be making much power.
There are some other guys here with better formulaic knowledge who could make quick work of the final drive ratio and give fairly accurate RPM figures for you. Obviously, with factory programming adjustments you could remove the rev limit and speed limit for the vehicle.

Yeah, that's what I thought re. the revs to achieve this. Thanks
I'd say it is possible. Does it not say that it used some kind of tuner? Most tuners could easily remove any rev limiter that would prevent that speed. I've had my truck up around 220kms/hr (137mph) and it still had A LOT of throttle to go. Common sense got the better of me and I realized that a truck that size is not meant for those speeds so I slowed it back down, but I bet if I pushed it it would have went there. Once tuned and the governor is removed these trucks are capable of high speeds, most people are just smart enough to realize that parts on an F350 are not built for high speeds, nor is it safe because of the size and weight of the truck. IMO

Im temped to take the govenor off my truck, but superdyuies arent meant to go fast, thats why why have govenors, it's not only the parts its the height off the ground/center of balance is alot higher than a mustang.
I am gonna say... that is very close to impossible. Unless... 1) Dramatic weight reduction.
2) Dramatic change in aerodynamics, that means slamming this thing to the floor. 3) Dramatic increase in HP and adding more RPM through gearing or over revving.
I would say you need well over 800hp... the drag on this truck is insane. The front end is like a brick wall!
I would love to be proven wrong though.
I have a few toys and 150 is hard in a car let alone a truck the size of a SD but ...273 gears and a bolt on overdrive and HP increase(torque to get speed... hp. to retain it ... I believe is the way it goes). It would be scarry going that fast. I have done 140 and that was in a car that was built for speed and corners.
my built hemi 59 dodge would scare you to death at 125 , my rayson craft 20 ft drag with a dual turboed 454 gale banks was even scarier. my drag bike left me a adrenalin rush you can,t believe.lucky i'm here .had some good woodies but no more.i'm pretty tame now.whew!
I have a 2004 E46 M3, with 333hp, 3200lbs, full suspension and exhaust. That thing wide open throttle indicated speed was 180mph. Actual laser speed was 168mph.... maxed out. Let me tell you that is insane speed. You eat up distance so fast its incredible. I am talking 10 miles in a 3 mins! The thought of doing anything over 100 in our truck scares the life out of me. I am also an avid motorcycle racer and it is rare... extremely rare to get up to that speed.
If I was a little younger and a little dumber I would put this to rest and give it a try and shoot the video while doing it, haha. I've had my bike up to 180mph and I agree that is crazy fast and the thought of getting close to that in an F350 is insanity. However, I will stand by my original statement and I do believe 160mph is possible on a good stretch of highway. Any takers?

Nice! I had a '91 E30 325i 5sp and a Bavarian autosport tuned chip. I really miss that car. 250,000+ miles on her! No plastic, great car all around. I got it to 125mph one time. The last 20 mph were really hard to get which is where I think the SD will die. My F250 stock rushes to 98mph very quickly but people don't realize once you get into the 100's, aero takes over and speed gains are exponentially slower with each mph.

Yup, got one right here.
Not to sound arrogant, but that is NOT possible with stock gearing and anything anywhere close to stock tires. You could do it with nothing short of 41" tires IF the power was there at 3,500 RPMs.
With 3.73 gearing and assuming 3500 RPMs as the max, with stock tires your truck will NOT go over 122 MPH. Speedometers can be off at that speed, which would explain why you thought you were going faster.
With a different cam and some very expensive engine parts you may be able to spin the engine past 4,000 RPMs, but I highly doubt you could develop any power at that RPM in stock form, tuned or not.
Play with this site and plug in some numbers. It's simple math, and numbers don't lie!
Crazy001, might have to disagree with the 122....Unless my GPS was off I let out of the throttle @ 127 (with plenty to spare)...not trying to pick an argument but the NOT more than 122 seemed like a very strong statement
