opinion about custom bed

YouTube - Dusty1's Truck Built for 4x4 Extreme Wheeling
I just bought an 86 single cab F250 with a 460/4speed that has no bed and I was thinking about making a custom one. I came across this while surfing youtube and thoght it was what I would like to do to mine. What do you guys think?

Not to sound like an ars, but I'm looking for like/dislikes of what that guy did to his bed. I got the tools to do it but not the complete knowledge of real offroading. This will be my first real 4x4 vehicle and I'm also looking for suggestions on ways to improve on his build. For instance, he has rubber bushing in between the frame and the bed/rollbar. Seems to me that if the vehicle ever did rollover it could shear those bolts right off. That and there's no support for the loop to keep it from folding over. Anybody here have pictures of their custom beds?

theres rubber bushings between the cab and frame and you rarely see those come off in rollovers....

i agree with reinforcing the loop though...but on a side note in a low speed flop over while wheeling that would probably be fine seeing as how the rear of the cab usually stays up in a wheeling rollover on its own...

a highway rollover and a wheeling rollover are two completely different situations with different forces in different areas...most wheeling rollovers are pretty much just flop overs which dont involve much impact...highway rollovers involve high impact for obvious reasons

I'll see if i can find pics of my 77 when i did the bed. I like that bed. It'll be bigger obviously.

A few questions:

Is this going to be a purely off road vehicle?

If so, do you want to shorten the frame?

Suspension Mods?

If you want a functional bed, but not the stock one, I would build the one in the video to fit your truck. It's a good clean design, which i like too.

EDIT:I built this on my truck and skinned it with 1/2" plywood covered in Herculiner. (The plywood was a bad idea because it will warp)

To answer Tre-E-Ford's questions
1) Yes, this thing will never see the road again
2&3) I need to decide if I want to keep it on leafs or change over to coils. If I go with a coil suspension then I will cut the frame shorter. How short will be decided then. I also want to move the rear axle so that the front and rear driveshafts are the same lengths and I won't do that until I put a doubler in it. Lots of things need to happen before I even get to the point of building a bed. Maybe? I also think I might be able to build something now and then just shorten the bed later. Still don't have anything writen in stone yet! Sometimes I make it more complicated than it needs to be.

4) I think he used composite decking wood for his bed which I liked a lot

Well, I'd suggest making it removable like this one, if you plan on changing the suspension or frame.

Of course, you can change it! That's what fabrication about. If you go to coils, or shorten the frame and want some different ideas, check the Ford Section at Pirate4x4. Plenty of shortened trucks with coils with tube beds that you can check out.

Yeah, I was just advising not to go with plywood.

i do like both designs, but i would personally make the tail end angle inward to keep it from hanging up

My biggest complaint about youtube videos is the music people play on their videos. A lot of the times I like the song, but I would prefer to hear the vehicle in the video instead. Guess thats why two of my toys don't have a radio and never will.
