96/97 Instrument cluster problem

Have any of you guys disassembled the instrument cluster? I've a 97 HD 250 with a speedo only cluster. I picked up a cluster w/a tach but its completely covered, inside and out with dust (gravel road owner). The cluster will bolt in as the wiring is the same, but this cluster has issues. I've got the plexiglass cover off, exposing the gauges, but need to access the speedo 'cuz the odometer trip button doesn't work. Do I have to pull off the gauge needles to get inside? I'm not sure that's a good idea because you could lose the gauge calibration. Or at least you'd lose it with older gauges, I'm not sure about the newer electronic ones. Thanks
