Dash cluster swap???

Looking to change my dash cluster. My truck is a '92 f250 with electronic speedo. Currently my cluster has four guages (two on each side of the speedo), I would like to put one in that has a factory tach. From what I've seen these clusters have the four guages on the left side of the speedo and the tach on the right side. I'm curious to know if this is a plug and go thing or is there any wiring that needs to be done?

Thanks

There's a tech article here on FTE. I used it when I installed my factory tach.

Installing An OEM Tachometer In A 1992-1996 F-150 Or Bronco .: Articles

It's pretty much a plug and play deal. Just make sure if your truck is gas, get a gas cluster, diesel gets a diesel cluster. Try you best to get one from a same year truck, since there are minor differences (ABS light, etc.). Mine's a '94 and I used a '93 cluster. I believe with a '92 you have to get another '92 since it only has the rear ABS.

It is a simple swap. I swapped mine out. The compatible years are 92-93 / 94-95 / 96 by itself (OBD II).

Most if not all of our truck have RABS. The main reason for the difference in the cluster is the air bag. The first year of the air bag was 94.

Also if you want to keep your milage and ratio programing of the PSOM(speedometer) you can switch them around. All speedo heads are the same mounting inside the clusters.

This is really great to get all this little info. I had no idea about the speedo, I thought the computer would take care of the milage. And the plug for the dual tank switch, I think I found that out the same way you did, lol.

I was told the Bronco I got my cluster from was a '93. Maybe it was a '94 then, or did Bronco's get airbags before F-150's?

I believe that Broncos got air bags and 3rd brake lights in 94 as well. Maybe the Bronco you got it from was a 94. Does your air bag symbol light up when you start the truck?

The problem I have read about with getting the wrong year cluster is that the battery won't charge.

yes the problem with the wrong years is that the pin location on the harness plug ins is slightly different. it will plug in but by having the open pins, it will create and open in your circuit and drain your battery quickly. thats why making sure your year is so important.

Looking to do this swap on my '97 F-350. Seems all the notes and hints miss my truck. My '97 is a 5.8 gas motor, has OBD-1, (confirmed) and no air bag (9300 gvw). Any ideas on what year dash cluster would work?
Thanks,

Roger Carter

I would think that you would need a cluster from another F250 F350. Since they are all OBD I and do not have an air bag, it seems that would work. Someone please chime in if I am incorrect.

Thanks TexasGuy. Would that be a '97, or would an earlier year with OBD 1 work? From the information I gathered in the thread, it sounded like there was compatability issues, year to year.

I would think an earlier 96 or even 95 etc would work, since the trucks are almost identicle and are all OBD I. I would look for a 97 F250 F350 cluster first though.
