Shell Rotella rebate
Similar beefs: testing oil was class-CH oil. No longer commercially available except as straight-weight oil, and even then almost 100% restricted to bulk-only.
I wonder what the effect of returning to "advanced" engine timing will do for engine oils? Much of the current soot arguements have been rendered somewhat meaningless, as SCR's ability to reduce NOx has resulted in returning to old-style, low-soot engine programming.
Both papers do have good slides on what the emissions regulations have done to largely wreck what was once a fairly stable and profitable business model.
I have to wonder: If there's no sign of a global emissions spec any time soon, why are they struggling under a global oil spec? Seems to me to make more sense to develop the oils for the markets that need them, and continue with the lower grades for the "less developed" countries, and bring them up as their specs are needed. That is, why lose sleep over countries like Thailand and Cambodia, who are still well below even EPA1994 emissions standards, as it appears they are doing?
Indeed, in countries such as this, where use of used cooking oil (or other 100% nonstandardized fuel) would seem to be rampant as a lower cost of doing business, it would seem to make sense to utilize older oils that are more capable of dealing with those less-than-stellar fuels.

Advance Auto has T6 on sale for $19.99
Buy 7 Gallons online with store pickup for 2 oil changes
Use Promo Code ES123 must order online with store pickup on oil
You will get $30 off your order. Don't know if the 5 times $19.99 would make the $100 requirement but you could order 6 and get the other one when you need to change oil.
Then get the rebate form Shell.
7 times $19.99 = $139.93 minus the $60 would be $79.93
