Antifreeze

Since I'm flushing my system from the oil/antifreeze mix I have going on now, is there a product preference between this Peak Fleet or I see two Rotella ELC and Rotella Ultra ELC for my 2001

Anybody use the Ford additive? http://www.fordparts.com/Products/Ch...-Coolants.aspx

The Peak fleet charge is a regular ethylene glycol coolant, but it is pre- charged with SCA additive. It requires checking and adjusting the SCA level periodically. Peak also makes an ELC that is more comparable to the Rotella ELC, Final Charge.

Hey last question on this, the truck is already 15 years old, but if I go to the Rotella ELC is there much of a benefit to adding the coolant filter, it has the best benefit with the green coolants right?

There's a huge difference between those two coolants. Huge.

Do your homework and know the difference and what you want to run. Check out the thread I have posted in this forum regarding coolant information. Just use the search term "Gooch" and you'll find it.

Adding a coolant filter is always a good idea.

Thanks Stewart, the main thing with any ELC seemed to be availability, but I was able to finally find some on the shelf at a local store. Now if I could just figure out the easiest way to get the rear drain plugs out, I don't think they've ever been touched I've been soaking them in Blaster for days, and with my larger starter I'm thinking I need to take it off to get pass side.

vtown00,
Glad you found some. For those that may be looking in the future big rig repair shops often have over the counter sales. I get Rotella concentrate at about $13 a gallon. Look for these truck centers or something like them
Kenworth, Hino, Ford, Volvo, Isuzu ? MHC

I just bought a case from Amazon 3 days ago.
Amazon.com: Delo (227808497-6PK) Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant - 1 Gallon, (Pack of 6): Automotive Amazon.com: Delo (227808497-6PK) Extended Life Antifreeze/Coolant - 1 Gallon, (Pack of 6): Automotive

Now that I'm not mobil, here's the link I was referring to in my previous post: Gooch's Coolant Flush Procedure and In-Depth Coolant Information

Check it out and you'll find instructions for how to access the drain plugs without removing the starter.

ok I see it states put a 1/4" ratchet head there, but in no way will that give me enough torque to loosen this rusted plug on either side of the truck, maybe if I didn't live in salt belt Ohio. I feel like if I push any more I'm going to round the plug out, I sprayed blaster yet again an will try later.

If I'm not able to get them off am I better off keeping green coolant in it?

Lots of soaking and take a small butane torch and heat the block AROUND the plug. This will expand the metal around the plug loosing it. Thats just how i get stubborn bolts out. Worst case giver all u got ! If it strips out weld a piece of flat bar or round stock to the plug and that should get it out. Ive sone that a few times.

And Stewart correct me if I'm wrong and i hope I'm not just for my wallets sake and a waste of my time but i was going to suggest to the OP and anyone else if you can't find coolant you can always stop by your local CAT Dealer and pick up CAT-ELC EC1 which is what I'm running ! (do i get a gold star for that or a red star ) ?

If you can't get the plugs out you can just re-flush with distilled water 3-4 times ( running to operating temp ) and should be good. A bit of a pain and costs a little bit but it will get the job done. Now if I had just paid attention and used the correct CAT ELC EC-1 coolant instead of the conventional ELC I would not need to do it again.

I used Gooch's procedure a couple of years ago and it worked perfectly. Didn't have the guts to experiment with different brands of antifreeze because of the cavitation issues so I used Ford Gold concentrate. As I remember, it was rather expensive. Didn't have problems with the plugs either.
