intermittent starting problem

i have a 2003 crown victoria 4.6L. for about the last 5 days the car only starts about half of the time. when thw car does start it starts right up, no cranking. just have to bump it over. it dosent crank for a while and then start, it just starts right up. when it dosent start, it just cranks. i put new fuel filter on it and the problem didnt go away. any help would be appreciated. originally i thought it was either a fuel problem or the ignition or some type of electrical problem. i have never posted to a forum before and thus group is the only group i have found about the 4.6L. i dont know if the problems would be the sane for a crown vic and an F150 but any advice or input would be appreciated. thank you

Check fuel pressure with the key in the on position and also when the engine is running, compare against factory specs to see if it is indeed a fuel problem.. any codes?

intermitent starting problems

yea, the only codes thrown are the driver and passenger catalitic converters. friends of mine told me to pull the elbow off the intake and try spraying carb cleaner in the intake, if it starts while cranking, ill know if it is a gas problem. if it does start should i start with the relays, ignition, ecm. what? i have never had a problem like this before. again thanks for the advice, all help is appreciated.

You can always try over at crownvic.net They have been around for years.
On their main page, hunt around for "Forum List" in the top 1/2 of the page.

That will get you to the forum list.

From the Forum List, select "1992 - up: Aeros & Whales".

Then look for the "4.6L Based Powertrains" forum.

It could be the Idle Air Control valve. They do not always just fail completely, and may actually show the symptoms such as yours. Most shop books for that car have pretty clear quick tests to double check this. The pin test is the one they usually fail. 10-15 min. job to change one.

My 1999 F-150, 4.6, has had 5 of these valves now. They are about $85.00. As a matter of fact, I just put #5 on a week ago, and noticed that they are now made with a small coil spring around the valve shaft, putting pressure on the piston valve, apparently to keep it open ?

Good test for the IAC is to depress the gas pedal slightly when cranking. If it starts, the IAC is bad.

Good point. In fact, on mine, working the throttle a bit did usually get it to start. It'd quit though when the pedal was released. Until they failed completely, I did find that snapping the throttle full open a few quick times in a row would often get the thing to work again, for a while.

Before the latest valve, with the new spring added, I never got more than 10-15 thousand miles on the valves. I'll see how this one works/lasts.

While this one is working, I'm going to dismantle one of the old ones, and see if I can make one that uses a cable control. As I'm almost always pulling a 5000 lb. trailer, working the throttle to keep it running really stinks.
