so iv been looking into buying one of these truck and i just test drove a 2000 f350 with a standard. i thought these truck were 6speeds, as in r, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6(D) but this truck was a 5speed as in r, L, 1, 2, 3, 4, D
i am asuming that the one i drove with 1,2,3,4,D was a towing tranny? and that the 6speed without the L is a norma tranny and not as torque???? or r they all like the one i drove?
The only difference is the L gear. The trannie with the L is considered a 6 spd because of the L. Personally I'd like to have an extra high gear but it is what it is. Maybe one of thees days I'll get a OD gear between the trans and transfer case.
But either tranny will tow just fine. Either way you're getting a trannie that is damn near bullet proof.
A 2000 will have a ZF-6 six speed transmission. No matter what the shift **** says. I think the F450 and F550 had PTO, but if it's a 250 or 350 and has a manual transmission, it's a six speed and will have the same gear ratios. That being said, if it has "L thru 5" then "L" is your granny gear. If it has "1 thru 6" then "1" is your granny gear, but regardless of which it is, the gear ratio is the same.
The ZF-^ is a 6 speed trans on the account that it has 6 forward moving gears. The only time I ever use "L" is when pulling a trailer up a hill at a very slow speed (5mph). Other then that starting off in "1" is fine. And using the 6th gear or "D" on the freeway as a cruising gear is perfect. With or without a trailer...
Just so no one is confused here is a pic of the shift ****...
doncha hate forgetting to take yer finger off the caps key?
Its even worse to forget to take your finger off the shift key... hmmm Not quite sure what the "caps key" is.... Theres a caps lock key? but that wouldnt do that... OR did you mean the shift key???

Maybe I can't count, but L, 1, 2, 3, 4 and OD (it isn't D, it is an OD) seems like six speeds to me. Would it be a better transmission if the **** said 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6?
There was only one manual transmission available. The manual trans with the diesel engine was always a six speed since 1999.
Thread Hijack: Mark, I am considering adding an external filter to my 6sp. would it be a good idea to also add a larger cooler? I tow about 17,000lbs.
