Is it an option to trade out the step rails for black tube versions, if so, I'd say the no clad would be on point......if it's not an option, then I'd say keep the clad so those brown step rails aren't alone on the truck.
The steps are on my short list. I just upgraded the mirrors, front grill replacement and working on rear bumper replacement today....tube steps are next
I traded my red Avalanch for my Excursion and I had the cladding on it...you just can't beat the Red/Tan or the Red/Gray two tone coloring. the Red HAS to have the cladding IMHO...you can go monochrome with the Gold and Black only the rest of the colors MUST have the cladding...I know this is a Ford board but here is a picture of my Red Lanche with the cladding...
I would have to say if the running boards were a jet black, then the no clad look would be the way. That light gray look of the boards now would need to have the clad to off set it. With the front bumper black, running boards all you would need would be the black rims.
Since you've taken the cladding off, I'm guessing you like it without the cladding. Your X looks good either way. If your going without cladding..here's what I think you should do...paint the grill black, black steps, black rims, Harley lights, and tinted rear lights. My .02

That's EXACTLY what I'm doing with my 05 White Eddie Bauer right now. Took the lower cladding off last weekend, ordered up some Ltd rear quarter panel plastic to fill the holes, took advantage of a Memorial Day Online sale for some 17x8 Mojave Teflons (no tax, no shipping!), and deciding on whether to Line-X the bumpers or just do a home Duplicolor rattle-can bedliner.
I'm liking the no-clad look personally. Updates the look out of the mid eighties.
Everyone note that the clad (which I removed from mine) damages the paint in several areas, which could lead to rust out in salty parts of the US. I love the no clad/no roof rack look, and my clad was scraped in one spot so I took it off. I had mud all over behind it when it came off and it stays like that in coastal sonoma county when it rains every day or so in the winter, and can't dry out.
i've been clad free for almost a year and i'm lovin it! but its all personal opinion. i really like how your truck looks w/out it. just look for some tube steps. i went with chrome for ovbious reasons.

I would love to see a pic when you are done. Thinking of doing the same to my white/tan eb.
I'm in the no clad camp for the above listed reasons... mine was already broken and causing rust issues and I wanted to paint the truck with Gatorhyde bed liner.
To me, plastic cladding/trim etc, just looks cheap and plasticky.... just my two pennies of course.
