Im on water pump #4 with 208k on the truck. I replaced the first one (original?) at 177k. Replaced with a NEW (not reman) from advanced, it lasted 28k before the front seal leaked and the bearing was slopply by feel. Replaced with a NEW (not reman) from NAPA, lasted for 3k bearing felt slopply by feel and seal leaked. I replaced it with another NEW one from NAPA.
Im running Fleet Charge ELC coolant with coolant filter.
This time i left the fan off.
Am I getting bad pumps? they all come from china now.
Can my fan be bent or off balance?
Should I go electric fan since I dont tow, The clutch fan only ever came on for the AC.
That is way too many pumps IMO. The first thing I thought of was dirty coolant but you are using a filter sooo
It could be all the things you mentioned. Out of balance fan or clutch or just plain old junk pumps. I wonder if the dealer sells them too, won't hurt to ask, their parts are usually better than aftermarket.
A new OEM fan and clutch should more than a set of electric fans. Since you don't tow, you should be OK....for what I read here. I've not tried it. Someone here will chime in with more help.
Parts guy Ed's site has the fan blades for $194 and the clutch is $265. There is no way im spending $460 on a hunch. How can I check them? Ed also has the water pump for $300, I paid just under half with my discount at NAPA.
Check your belt, idlers and tension pulley. With engine running watch the tension pulley to see if it is bouncing. I've had bad belts cause this, to much stress somewhere in the rotation of the belt on the pump.
Did you try the international replacement, or are you getting pumps from autozone?
There is an article on here someplace where somebody put on the international pump.
Goes on perfect cept for a smidgen of grinding to account for an idler pully.
I bought the truck @ 164k and the tensioner arm could move forward and back inline with the engine. I have a 7 rib belt bought from parts guy ED using my vin number.
Hussler: the tensioner barely moves with the engine running.
I checked and I have the 8 rib (7 valleys) belt on my 97. WP is driven on back side of the belt (friction only) and since you have the IH water pump the 7 rib belt setup is probably correct, don't know. I did notice my belt is perfectly centered on the WP pulley though, something else you could check.
Just a heads up, some so called new pumps from these parts stores never really hold up, some do but it seems IMO theres more failures with these pumps that I read on here thruout the years. RiffRaff Performance Diesel up in the 7.3, he has OEM Motorcraft pumps for about a 140.00, not a bad price for OEM and it has a way more better chance of holding up, if you find out your other problems first. Good luck..
